Iran Targets 15 GW of Small-Scale Solar Deployment

Iran Targets 15 GW of Small-Scale Solar Deployment

June 23, 2026

Iran is accelerating its renewable energy ambitions with a new proposal to deploy 15 GW of small-scale solar power systems across the residential, commercial, and agricultural sectors.

According to reports from the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the Iranian Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA) has submitted a plan to the government aimed at rapidly expanding distributed solar installations throughout the country.

SATBA CEO Mohsen Tarztalab stated that achieving large-scale deployment of small solar systems will require both local manufacturing and equipment imports. The organization has also proposed additional financial support measures to encourage residential solar adoption.

Focus Shifts Toward Distributed and Hybrid Solar Systems

As part of its new strategy, SATBA plans to prioritize rooftop, residential, commercial, and agricultural solar projects, complementing traditional utility-scale developments.

A key component of the initiative is the introduction of integrated solar solutions combining PV modules, hybrid inverters, and battery storage systems. These systems are designed to make solar energy more accessible to households and businesses while improving energy reliability.

Tarztalab noted that expanding the use of hybrid solar systems will also require broader technical training programs covering installation, operation, and maintenance.

Expanding Solar Workforce Development

To support the country's renewable energy expansion, SATBA recently announced the launch of 17 specialized solar training centers. The organization aims to train 200,000 renewable energy professionals over the next five years, helping address workforce demands as solar deployment accelerates.

New Solar Investment Fund Planned

IRNA also reported that Iran's first dedicated solar project investment fund could be launched within the coming weeks.

The fund is expected to have an initial capacity of 500 MW and will allow residential and commercial participants to invest in solar projects by purchasing shares. The initiative is intended to increase public participation in renewable energy development while attracting private capital to the sector.

Renewable Energy Targets Remain on Track

Iran has set a target of reaching 12 GW of renewable energy capacity by the end of the year. Despite recent delays in equipment deliveries caused by transportation and logistics challenges, SATBA believes the goal remains achievable.

According to Tarztalab, imports of solar modules, hybrid inverters, and battery storage equipment are continuing through multiple transportation channels, including road, rail, sea, and air freight.

The organization also confirmed that the development of standardized hybrid solar packages remains a priority and is expected to be introduced in the near future.

According to earlier IRNA reports, Iran's cumulative renewable energy capacity has already surpassed 5 GW, providing a foundation for the country's next phase of solar growth.
